In-flight movies suck, anyway.

Yep, my powerbook screen is still bigger when it sits on my lap than those crappy TVs in the aisles!

I heard they are actually doing it to yank all the A/V equipment out of the planes. Saves 500-1000lbs which in turn saves fuel.

Yep, I just hope we don't get in the air and they say "throw your carry ons out the door. We are running out of fuel' ! ! ! ! !

Elimination of frills and extras.. things like, oh, maintenance... uh, radar...
sorry for the lack of seat-belts... just hold on to the straps above your heads... uh, those of you in coach, you don't have straps... Old Bob Newhart bit;

I saw that movie. John Wayne was the pilot.

The budget airlines down here do that.
You can rent a little hard drive player with an LCD monitor from them. The battery lasts about 3 hours, so you should be able to get in two movies before you have to pay again.

I have been in older DC-9's that still had big CRTs overhead. I would have ditched those long ago.
Getting rid of in-plane AV systems to save weight is a reasonable idea, but if everyone is just going to bring on their own portable system there will be no savings realized. |
