OK, so now I'm buying a new coil unit for my home's AC. Would you like a new furnace as well, sir?

Dude took the coil's cover off. Definitely no drainage clog anywhere. Big-time rust on drain pan. Saw big rusty hole too. Getting a new coil unit Tuesday, one with a pan made of PVC, not metal. Joy.

The furnace is the original unit. 60,xxx BTU I think he said, 17". We were considering a more efficient furnace anyway, but when you're faced with actually having to PAY for it it's another matter. Another dude will come out Tuesday for a quote or two there.

Welcome to the club. Of course, you're sitting at home too warm, because your AC is busticated; I'm sitting at home too cold, because my furnace doesn't work. I'd be glad to trade a bit of your warmth for some of my coldth right now. My fingers are getting numb. Of all times to have a furnace go out - during one of the coldest and wettest Augusts on record. It was 46 when I got up this morning. And I suppose you're having unseasonably warm weather? Sad

They will try to give you a bogus time limit too. "You have to let us know by Tuesday morning to get this price".

What part of the world are you in AlphaDog? Dang, that's cold for August.

Not Alaska!! Smile I live about 40 miles south of Seattle. And, yes, it sure is cold for August. It's not unusual for the nights to cool off, but it usually doesn't fall below the mid 50s. Plus, the days are usually warm enough so the house gets warm enough during the day to still be comfortable the next morning without wishing the furnace could kick on. If I don't freeze to death between now and then, it is supposed to start warming up again by Wednesday. It'll be really pleasant for at least another week, assuming the forecast is right.

It's actually warmer in Fairbanks right now than it is at my house.

If you're putting a coil on a gas furnace make sure he orders a coil with a high heat pan,
there is a difference. I cracked a plastic pan that I had with my straight AC running a coil in
my oil furnace, they were able to order a metal pan way back then. So when we put in the
new heat pump a few years back we made sure to get a high heat pan and removed the
regular plastic pan and put the optional pan in place.

AlphaDog, it's not busted, just leaking all the water instead of draining it. I've decided to keep running the AC (it's 90 and muggy outside --- this is Atlanta) and swap out a series of towels surrounding it every couple hours.

Having water dripping down into the furnace does it no good, but we've decided to replace it at the same time in a few days. It's old and we'll get something more efficient anyway.

BL --- Tuesday morning their rep will come out and I'll also have at least one other company come out. Not worried about the potentially "wildly fluctuating price" of furnaces, should they be presented in that manner.

Grateful11 --- dude said they plan on installing one with a PVC pan so that it'll not rust. I asked him what the drawback there is, compared to the original galvanized metal unit that's all crappy with rust. He didn't say there was a drawback, I suppose you just named it perhaps. So I'll ask around. Another drawback may be that while it never rusts, rust or corrosion from the coil as it ages may then clog the drain. This one never had a chance to clog the drain, it just rusted through instead.

They have tablets you can drop into your drain pan to kill algae, they work, I use them in my
pan and my condensate pump. I couldn't find the type I use, a guy that services our
systems at work gave me about two dozen of them.

Here's some info:
