Ike disasters: Ohio WINS !
#1
For whatever reason, as Ike buzzed up the Ohio river valley, it gained strength. That's right. Ohio was hit with hurricane force winds and flooding rain. 6 people have been killed so far, mostly by falling trees and debris. 84 of Ohio's counties have been declared disaster areas. The most problems relate to lack of electricity- as many as 2 million families are powerless. And many of our rapid responder teams had already headed off to Texas to help out.

This is only the second Hurricane that I can remember in Ohio- the last one was the Blizzard of '78, where winds exceeding 120 mph swept over the city dropping many feet of snow.

Dangit. I've always been kind of smug that we don't have to deal with Hurricanes and such. Can't say that any more.

Hurricane Ivan did something similar in Pittsburgh a few years ago. I don't think that they got the wind but they did get the rain.

Here are some photos. It was the worst flooding in Pittsburgh in 100 years, but I don't think it even made the national news.

Here in southeast Ohio we lost power for about 30 hours. Many trees down. It's going to take me a while to clean up all the branches in the yard. It was the most consistent high sustained winds I've ever seen here.

What part of southeast Ohio are you in?

Yup, going home tonight to fire up the chainsaw and start clearing trees. Still haven't had a call back from our insurance adjuster to look at our roof. I imagine they are pretty slammed right now. I was one of the fortunate few to not lose power...

What's Cincinnati like now? I remember back in 1997, living in a Cinci suburb, getting all the rain. Did the city, at the river's edge, fare better this time?

Ike hit a cool/dry front. Just squeezed that water out of it like a wet rag hitting a wall.

Thanks for that link, Jeff. I lived in Cincinnati from 1996 to 2001. At the time of the flood, I was living in Clifton, but we bought a house in May 1997 in Columbia Tusculum. Fortunately, our house was up on a hill, next to Columbia Parkway, so it was spared any water problems (at least from that flood).

I've escaped it so far. Was in Cleveland last night/earlier today and got into Columbus about an hour ago (will be leaving at 1:30 tomorrow afternoon.)

No problem at either hotel and trade show traffic was decent. Hope that will be case tomorrow as well.

Good luck to all who are without power and are still bailing out. I've been there and know how rough it is.

Ohio is definitely not getting as much news coverage as Texas, in fact this is the
first I've heard of it.
