F/U - Powerbook shut down problem

So I did an archive and install and went back to 10.5.4, and after flirting with the possibility that it fixed it, the machine shut down again. So I think I can eliminate a software problem at this point.

Which leaves me with the original culprits, bad PRAM battery or heat. Temp Monitor is telling me the processor is running at 130 F, which is within the listed spec. Also, the machine worked on its current hardware config for months without problem, why would it change now? Fan is still working, I can hear it.

Any other thoughts? MBP time??

Once before I worked on a powerbook with similar symptoms, (maybe it was an ibook). But what it turned out to be was a failed cable underneath the keyboard. Intermittent shutdowns, I guess caused by an intermittent open circuit / or closed circuit in that cable.

I don't remember what your particular model looks like, but if you look under the keyboard are there any small ribbon cables or wires that appear to be at a stressed angle, where possibly the copper inside has failed?

Thanks for the tip mikebw. My next step is to crack it open and take a look inside. Make sure the fans are clean, no screws rattling around, etc.

If that doesn't work I'll take it to an apple store.

Does Apple charge for diagnosis or just repairs? It's out of warranty.

They charged me for the last couple of times I've brought equipment in to them. It's been a long time, but I seem to remember a fee of $75. It's waived if you elect for the repair.

Maybe they've changed their policy. I'm not too sure.

You're going to feel like a dinosaur when you bring that machine in there, with the other MacBook, MacBook Pros, and iPhones waiting there in line with you. Be tough!
