An easy way to get my 60G iPod photo to play through a non-sync'd Mac?
#1
I've got my A2s hooked to my main iMac (Al24") via the earphone/Sound Out jack, and I have some music on it.

Most of of my music is on my 20" G5 iMac which is where I sync my 'Pods and 'Phone.

I don't want to load any more music onto the Al iMac; I'd just like to temporarily play the 'Pod through it and to my A2s.

I don't want to stream anything anywhere through the AirPort Extreme or Express. I want to keep it simple without changing the configuration.

I tried connecting the 'Pod via USB. It shows up in iTunes and I can see the music on it, but it can't be selected ("grayed out"). I suppose this is to keep it from being added to another computer. No joy.

Then it was connected to the iMac's Line In port via the earphone jack, and Line In was selected in Sound preferences. I see the signal in the "VU" meter, but the sound doesn't seem to go anywhere. At least it doesn't reach the speakers.

I can connect directly to the speakers, but that's also not what I want to do.

Set music to sync manually?

jim, I'm thinking that setting iTunes to sync manually won't change the "one-way" nature if iT.

While that might connect the 'Pod without putting any of the iMac's music on it, I don't see the iMac as being able to play the 'Pods music.

I was hoping that I could what I wanted, I could control the music and selection via iTunes and possibly my 'Phone via the Remote app.

I may just have to give up and play the 'Pod directly through the speakers.

If the AlMac is one of your authorized computers, it should play from the iPod. If it is not an authorized computer, then you have your answer. If you do have it authorized, then I am clueless (once again) and can help no further . . . bummer (potentially . . .) :banghead:

It's authorized, though your post made me wonder.

I just downloaded Balls, a 'Phone app, to test. (I'll have to send the app to the GMac since I don't sync to the AlMac.

That's for the assist, nonetheless, WHiiP!

If both computers are on the same network, why not turn "sharing" on in iTunes?

Thanks, macphan.

But I didn't want to have both computers on just for the sake of playing a little music. I thought there would be a QnD way of playing a few songs from my 'Pod onto the AImac.

Can you get an adapter to plug from A2's into iPod?
I do that with some old JBL speakers.
How are the speakers connected to the Almac?

I would then suggest getting a switch or adapter to plug the iPod into the speakers directly.

No, if you set it up to sync manually, you will also be able to play music on it through another computer's iTunes.
