Best option for a DVD drive that reads HD DVDs?
#1
Based on volcs0's post here: http://forums.macresource.com/read.php?1...msg-647821 I picked up some HD DVDs cheap and I'm hoping to get them onto my hard drive to watch (and hopefully burned to a regular DVD eventually). So I'm looking for a DVD drive that will read HD-DVDs and wondering what my best option is?

It looks like the XBox HD-DVD player might work, but then all it can do is play them. If I could find a reasonably priced drive that was also a burner I'd just upgrade my old NEC external EIDE drive (doesn't even burn DL DVDs, that's how old it is). It doesn't need to burn HD-DVD or Blu-ray, just read that format.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
~A

This is what I have in my hackintosh:

I think $100 is the current price-point for blu-ray/HDDVD readers.

I also have an XBox HD-DVD, but I haven't tried it with my mac yet.

Buy an HD-DVD set top player (or XBox drive) on eBay, take it apart and take the drive out. It'll probably be a SATA drive, just install that in your box or in an external case. That's almost certainly your cheapest option, you should be able to find one for $40 or less.
