Hi all,
Am zeroing out a 60-gig drive (8-pass with Panther) and I was just wondering how long will this take? It says that it's writing random data to the drive but the progress bar has barely budged!
Thanks.

A little back of the envelope math.
Let's assume that it can write about 30MB/sec. So, 60,000MB/30MB = 2000 seconds per pass, 8 passes = 16,000 seconds.
16,000/60 = 266.66 minutes
266.66/60 = 4.44 hours. Use that as a ballpark estimate.

Oh great...thanks GGD!
I guess that 120 gig drive will have to be done tomorrow!

seems like a colossal waste of time on such small drives?

It might be better if I just bought a bag of cement and mixed up some to dump the drives in?

if you are just trying to destroy them, then yeah =)
just drill a hole in them

What? We're talking about zeroing-out and writing random data to the drive...eight times! That won't do it?
