Zeroing Out HD..How Long?
#1
Hi all,

Am zeroing out a 60-gig drive (8-pass with Panther) and I was just wondering how long will this take? It says that it's writing random data to the drive but the progress bar has barely budged!

Thanks.

A little back of the envelope math.

Let's assume that it can write about 30MB/sec. So, 60,000MB/30MB = 2000 seconds per pass, 8 passes = 16,000 seconds.

16,000/60 = 266.66 minutes
266.66/60 = 4.44 hours. Use that as a ballpark estimate.

I guess that 120 gig drive will have to be done tomorrow!

seems like a colossal waste of time on such small drives?

It might be better if I just bought a bag of cement and mixed up some to dump the drives in? Smile

If you are trying to clean the drive so know one can get data off, it is quite useless.
Zeroing will not prevent that, off the top of my head I know five techs that can read data off that HDD no matter how much you zero it.
Very little equipment needed, regular PC, and some software.

What? We're talking about zeroing-out and writing random data to the drive...eight times! That won't do it?
