Connect monitor to iMac
#1
We're sending my iMac to my wife's office and she wants to use her 20" Apple Display along with it. What connector do we use for that? I did look in the Apple Store but couldn't quite discern which one I would need.
It's a 2.0 Core Duo 2GB iMac running 10.5.6. And yes, my new one is ordered and is scheduled for Friday delivery! TIA.

Don't order until you get someone else to confirm this, but I ordered a mini-DVI to DVI adapter when I wanted to connect a second monitor to my iMac, which is a 20" like the one you describe. I wasn't connecting an Apple monitor, but I seem to remember that the days of them having a unique connection are long gone, aren't they?

This is the one I bought:

The iMac has a mini-DVI port - get an appropriate adapter (mini-DVI to DVI or mini-DVI to VGA) to work with your external display...Apple has made more than one 20" display, right? :-)

Correct, and I made the dangerous assumption the monitor in question was DVI. If not, I withdraw my recommendation!

Well, that's the interesting thing. When I look at the back of the monitor I see just one fat cord coming out of the center and nothing plugged in to the USB or FW ports. My buddy says that it splits into 4 different cords and he says to unplug that from the old computer and there should be a FW and a USB and plug each of those into the iMac. Apparently the monitor is powered thru the computer instead of separate AC cord. I'll check it out; I may not have to buy anything to do this.

That's not quite correct and you will still need the mini-DVI to DVI adapter.

The four components of the "fat cord" are USB, Firewire, power (which plugs into a separate brick), and DVI.
