Ethernet hard drive . . .

I'm blocking on what you call these but I'm wondering who's got one and whether they'd recommend it (or can I BYO?).
Would like to have a hard drive wired to my router that's accessible from the whole network.

NAS = Network Attached Storage

There is another type, similar name but I think there is an extra letter, and those are more difficult to use. You mount it on one Mac, and you cannot access it from another Mac unless you unmount it from the first Mac. I forgot the exact name, I think NDAS or something like that. Some people say to avoid those, I don't have any first hand experience with neither of them, but good luck

whats your price range? they can be expensive.

i have a readynas which i love. so do the people i've convinced to buy them but they're not cheap.

Was kind of hoping they weren't expensive. Would be willing to pay maybe $60-80 above the cost of a bare drive for one.

Another option: I think an Apple Airport Base station (the latest Extreme version?) has a USB port that can be used for connecting a hard drive. has been discussed here several weeks ago. Someone posted a nice link to an Apple KB article explaining which airport express/extreme does what. Note that some (express?) only allow for printer sharing, while others (extreme?) allow for both printer sharing and USB hard drive sharing.

you're probably best off using an airport basestation or the asus router w/dd-wrt.

Gracias . . . a bunch more than I'm looking to get into. I like my Belkin and would be happy to keep using it as long as it's still kicking.
