WCDMA + GSM phones?
#1
I saw this on dealmac, and I see it's a GSM phone, but they also mention WCDMA. Isn't CDMA the technology behind Sprint and Verizon, so does that mean this phone works with Sprint (or Verizon) and a GSM network, like ATT or T-Mobile?

"Unlocked Nokia E63 3G Smartphone for $198 + free shipping
Dell Small Business offers the Unlocked Nokia E63 3G Smartphone in Red for $198.39. With free shipping, it's $37 under our mention from two weeks ago and the lowest total price we've seen. This quad-band phone features a 2.36" 320x240 LCD, 2-megapixel camera with LED flash and video capture, QWERTY keyboard, 802.11g wireless, Bluetooth, 110MB built-in memory, microSD card slot, text-to-speech message reader, support for email attachments, 3G network support, up to 11 hours of talk time via GSM, over four hours via WCDMA, and more"

No. Will work with AT&T or T-Mobile here in the states. If you want 3G, you are stuck with AT&T.

Instead of "Time Machine" he typed "lime Machine". The T and L keys are quite far from each other, you're supposed to type T with left hand and L with right hand. It was an unusual mistake, that's all.

WCDMA is not CDMA.

You'd be stuck with AT&T or T-Mobile.

Speaking of that, can phones be hacked to work on a pre-pay system like Metro PCS? I've currently got 4 lines of unlimited service at $100/mo + tax. So the deal is hard to beat. The incoming coverage is limited nationally but not the outgoing which works for me since all my phones originate and stay in a primary coverage area. So the rate is worth the pain.

Thing is they are like Apple and only provide service for phones bought from them or their dealers. Are they hackable and would it be worth the effort?

In my dreams I would hack 4 iPhones into the Metro system, pump up my service to full usage (about $40/mo extra) all in an effort stick it to AT&T, dropping Nextel completely and saving more than a few bucks.

I have one of similar phones (Blackberry 8707h), with the sole purpose of being able to use it around the world (GSM), including Japan (WCDMA). But it is T-Mobile here in the US.

Isn't Metro only CDMA?

Actually, I figured they piggybacked of Verizon/Sprint, because I don't recall seein GSM cards a few
years ago in their phones.

As long as you never leave their area, I guess it's a decent deal. Atlanta is like $50 (plus fees). But the
fact that you can't use an Atlanta phone in a different Metro zone is like living in a Pinto under a bridge
without the brunette!
