I am shocked. Actually I can't think of another example in the past 11 years or so on this forum that Apple has so surprised on price. At that price (what is the EDU price?), I will preorder for sure.

tuq,

The price is great but unless I'm misconstruing what I saw in the keynote, I think those prices are just for the upgrade for existing owners of leopard. I suspect those with other flavors of X will have to pay full price for it. Since I have a Mac Pro that shipped with Leopard, I'm wondering if Ill be eligible for the $29 upgrade. It may be only available at that price for those who bought a retail box. We'll have to wait for more details.

$29. Cool, I can finaly afford to upgrade from 8.6.

Yeah, you really might want to modify that headline. The way Macrumors' feed reads supports what Robert says about the $29 price being for Leopard users only. No use getting Tiger users' and others' hopes up and then dashing them.

I'm sure they'll have a full retail version available for $129 or whatever for those of you who don't have 10.5 already.

Leopard upgrade only.
This was the one announcement that got me truly excited.
10.5 was the first OS I ever bought as an upgrade.

A Tiger-using foot dragger would have to succumb to some powerful wishful thinking to read the headline and imagine Retail Leopard can be theirs for only $29

For the Leopard users among us, this is a relief. But it makes sense, doesn't it? Can you imagine the heaps of scorn Apple would have to endure if they announced that the upcoming Snow Leopard upgrade will cost the full retail amount?

If Apple announced Snow Leopard at $129, Mac users, columnists, tech pundits and financial analysts would greet this news with shock, anger, and mockery. Then the White House and Congress would get involved, and things would get ugly. Steve would personally have to apologize to Mac users, and give out store credits.

$49 might have squeaked by, if Apple had announced that price. But $29 is even better. A low enough barrier, upgrading Leopard users can step up without hesitation.

I wasn't going to go from Leopard to Snow Leopard, but at this price, I'm in for a Family Pack.
