New battery arrived today. Installed. Nothing. The thing is, I still don't think (s)he switched the power supply, for a few reasons.
1. She called back within a time frame that would have had her pretty much just arriving back home from when she left me. (Yeah, maybe she knew she was going to switch it and played the game accordingly.)
2. Several emails (from her iPhone) expressed the initial interest, and in a follow-up phone call she explained that she needed something fairly quickly, as her PC died. (Yup, this could well just be a story.)
3. She drove back with everything the next day and stood and watched while I tried to troubleshoot in front of her. (Yes, if she knew the power supply was dead she knew I wasn't going to just fix it on the spot.) But her time has to be worth something.
4. When I emailed her to explain that it might be the battery and that I was ordering a new one, she asked me to please let her know if that fixes it because she's still interested. (Yeah, again, that could be all to make it look good.)
5. Finally, I've really inspected this thing and if she switched the power supply, then she also was meticulous about putting back dust on the p.s. housing, the optical drive/Zip drive housing, etc. because there was a neat layer of dust on those things. There was also no evidence of screws having been messed with – at least none that I could see. And she would have had to remove the optical and Zip drives to get at the screws for the power supply housing.
Maybe I'm just being naive. Hey, if I've been scammed I'll get over it. My experiences with Craigslist up to now have all been favorable, so I'll consider it a lesson learned. The bottom line is that it's now a shell that I guess I can try to sell for other parts. Should I list it again as a dead machine with everything included as before or should I list RAM, drives, case, etc. separately? Would doing that be worth the effort?
