Buy the first Apple Macintosh Plus ever, owned by Gene Roddenberry

Geek explosion! Profiles in History is set to auction off the first Apple Macintosh Plus, serial number 0001, which was given to Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry by Apple. Man, tell people that George Lucas wrote the first Star Wars draft on this thing and you've got the trifecta.

It'll be auctioned off on October 8th and 9th, and it's got a surprisingly low estimated sale price between $800 and $1,200. That low? Do you guys know that this is a combo of Apple nerdery and Star Trek nerdery? You might want to add a zero to the end of that estimate.

I'd like to see some documentation to back up that claim.

First, it's not a MacPlus, it's an original 128K Mac (M0001). Second, that serial number indicates that it was manufactured at the Fremont factory in the 20th week of 1984, which is pretty late to be the first one, given that it was introduced in January 1984. The MacPlus wasn't introduced until 1986.

That just ads more confusion, the back panel picture is from a MacPlus, but that serial number and model number picture is not. MacPlus was Model M0001A.

The keyboard pictured is the one that came with the 128k, 512k and 512ke Macs, the MacPlus keyboard was wider and had a numeric keypad.

They also say it was from a factory in Fresno. Apple didn't have a factory in Fresno, the early Macs were built in Fremont CA.

The first 4 characters of the serial number F420 are the key to all this, the first letter is the factory F is Fremont, the next digit is they year, 4 is 1984, and the next two are the week, week 20 (sometime in May 1984). So, if it is a MacPlus with that model and serial number, then something has been altered.

It looks like it was an original 128K Mac that was upgraded to a MacPlus with an upgrade kit from Apple. All of the pieces of the puzzle fit if that were the case, except for the BS story about it being first out of the factory. It's just an old used Mac.

An upgrade kit was offered for the earlier Macintosh 128K and Macintosh 512K/enhanced, which included a new motherboard, floppy disk drive and rear case. The owner retained the front case, monitor, and analog board. Because of this, there is no "Macintosh Plus" on the front of upgraded units, and the Apple logo is recessed and in the bottom left hand corner of the front case. However, the label on the back of the case reads "Macintosh Plus 1MB". The new extended Plus keyboard could also be purchased. Unfortunately, this upgrade cost almost as much as a new machine.

Well, my Mac SE had a hard drive AND 2, count 'em, 2 SuperDrives.

Plus, for a while, it had Mr. Spock saying "Fascinating" as the alert sound.

What do you think I could get for that?

Did I mention I still have it?
