At last!

I guess they figure the available i5 and i7 processors for the 27" are enough to differentiate the two.....

In Plane Switching - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TFT_LCD#In-..._.28IPS.29

"improve on the poor viewing angle and the poor colour reproduction of TN panels at that time.[4] Its name comes from the main difference from TN panels, that the crystal molecules move parallel to the panel plane instead of perpendicular to it. This change reduces the amount of light scattering in the matrix, which gives IPS its characteristic wide viewing angles and good colour reproduction.[5]"

DUH - It's the technology that the new iMacs have in their LCD displays...
"Built-in 21.5-inch (viewable) or 27-inch (viewable) LED-backlit glossy widescreen TFT active-matrix liquid crystal display with IPS technology"

Glad to be of help...

But seriously - check this link for a detailed explanation.

The old 20" displays were TN (not Twister, Naked) which accounted for 6-bit display technology and relied on dithering to get 16.7million colors. TN displays also had artifacts such as narrow viewing angles and banding of colors across the screen.

I don't know if the latter was a product of TN displays, or just poor execution of them.

But IPS is pretty much Top Drawer.

The 20" white iMac LCDs were lauded for their display quality - it wasn't until the 20" Al iMacs that display quality went south. Were the displays on the 20" iMacs IPS?

Probably not, just PVA or S-PVA.

I believe the white iMacs were in fact S-IPS.
