He seems like a genuinely nice guy. Just finished watching him on Letterman. Very entertaining.

There was a great interview with him last Saturday on Weekend Edition. He was at the Great Lakes Theater Festival in Cleveland
where he got his start. A lively interview including lots of questions from students. Genuinely funny and worth a listen.

A funny quote from the interview -

"Doing Apollo 13, I got to walk around in really cool spaceman uniforms, you know, with patches on them and stuff like that,"
Hanks said. "I could swagger a little bit. And I think I probably came home and was acting like Jim Lovell a little bit too often.
I was told in no unqualified terms to knock it off."

: -)

Also - his appearance on "Wait Wait" http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story...Id=5402390

Tom Hanks ranks as the most over-hyped, and celebrated actor in my opinion. Number ONE. Period.

I have never walked away from a Hanks movie thinking to myself that there was no one better for that role. I can enjoy the movie just fine, but I think he has very little talent.

Oh brother. Evidently you've never seen a Keanu Reeves movie.

Hanks is really a very good actor indeed, and I applaud him for his work as an actor and producer on projects that have brought important parts of American history to the screen (Apollo 13, Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, John Adams, etc.).

Circa 1995, a friend of mine was in a French airport in an almost deserted terminal when Tom Hanks came up and sat down. My friend looked at him and said, "You're Tom Hanks!" Hanks replied, "I am Tom Hanks!" They chatted, and my friend said that his roommate would never believe that he had a conversation with Tom Hanks. Hanks said, "Why don't we call him?" They called him up, and Hanks left an answering machine message on his machine. The roommate came home, thought it was a joke, and erased the message. :offair:
