When I went to UT, the squirrells would come up to us and eat our chips, applecores, whatever! I'd spend time watching the feral cats hunt the fat squirrels!

ok.

My thoughts are whilst cats are natural predators, the adult squirrels would have had to fight their way to survival, right? Wouldn't that make them tougher?

depends upon the cat. most squirrels are a bit much for a cat to take on but a good hunter cat should be able to manage it

Depends on the cat... Depends on the squirrel...

Some squirrels aren't in good shape...

Max hasn't (to my knowledge) tackled a squirrel.
Chipmunks he's very proud of when he catches (they're a LOT faster than he is... so catching one is an accomplishment).

Most squirrels are probably too quick to get caught by a cat out in the open, but if they are not paying attention or the cat can sneak up then it's over. In a cage match situation I think the cat would get him without too much trouble.

The domesticated house cat is the most vicious killer in the entire animal kingdom because it can and does kill the largest selection of other species of animals than anything else on the planet, almost exclusively for sport, except perhaps for humans.
