I have been coughing for the past 6-7 evenings. all is fine during the day. In fact it's so fine during the day, that I almost forget that I cough in the evening. I say it must be gone, but then at 9-10 PM the coughing starts.
if I don't forget about it, I am going to call the doctor tomorrow, but I bet that I get up, shower and go to work and feel just fine and forget about it.
So what causes this strange coughing?

Dry air from running the heater more in the winter is the most likely culprit. The dry air irritates the throat and causes coughing, more pronounced at night when you are inside.

It's psychosomatic. Anticipatory. Similar thing happens to me except my nose starts to run.

Start with asthma and allergies or irritation from smoking.
Temps drop. The air hold less moisture.
The heat comes on. Dries things out more.
Bronchial passages dry out.
Coughing produces phlegm and gets mucus moving, lubricating, moisturizing and cleaning respiratory surfaces.
...
Take a shower at night and keep a humidifier by your bed.
Edit: I'm not a medical doctor. But I've been through the same sh!t with coughing at night. If it gets really bad, I boil some water and suck the vapor for awhile.

Ditto Doc.
I get that too sometimes, and I have hot air heating, so yeah it dries everything up.
I doubt you're sick, but don't listen to me—i am not a doctor.
