Amazon’s 'Prime Day' event is July 8–11
Posted by: steve... - Today, 01:51 AM - Forum: Tips and Deals - Replies (3)

Prime members can shop Amazon’s Prime Day event July 8–11.

I canceled a few months ago but am wondering if getting it for one month now at $15/month would be worth it. I'm seeing quite a few decent 'Prime Only' deals on Slickdeals.

The Budget Busting Bill moves the Space Shuttle to Texas
Posted by: RonT (aka Ombligo) - Today, 01:22 AM - Forum: 'Friendly' Political Ranting - Replies (7)

The Budget Busting Bill just passed has a provision to move the Space Shuttle Discovery from the Smithsonian to Houston, TX by 2027. The addition was placed in the bill by Texas Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn. The bill allocates $85 million to move the shuttle and build a facility for it at Johnson Space Center.

Besides the Smithsonian, the remaining shuttles are on display at Kennedy Space Center, the California Science Center in Los Angeles, and the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York. The Johnson Space Center currently has the shuttle mockup "Independence" atop the 747 used to transport the crafts.

The transport was last used to fly the shuttles to their museum sites 13 years ago and has not been flown since.

I guess we should be happy Cruz didn't send it to Cancun

How to stop your LG or Samsung smart TV from tracking you
Posted by: RAMd®d - Today, 12:51 AM - Forum: Tips and Deals - Replies (9)

How to stop your LG or Samsung smart TV from tracking you.

Even when used as a monitor for your Mac, an LG or Samsung smart TV will periodically capture what's on screen and send it to company servers. Here's how to stop that terrible behavior.

WTF?!

Smart TVs from LG and Samsung are increasingly being used as monitors for Mac and PC, given that they are generally cheaper than an OLED display. The trade-off that you get for an inexpensive TV is adware. To accomplish this goal, they can capture screenshots of everything on screen, and sell it to just about anybody who asks, or they use that data themselves for targeted home screen advertising.

This isn't a giant problem when you're watching television. But when you're working on your Mac on a television, that capture can include sensitive documents, emails, private work, and everything else that happens on your computer.

Here's what you need to know, and how to turn it off on a LG or Samsung OLED display.

Last Nights Drink, a Mexican Old Fashioned

One shot of Silver Tequila (I used Patron)
A squeeze of lime
Some Angostura Orange Bitters
Two barspoons of Agave Syrup
Mix in a Rocks Glass.

I have a huge ice block maker, so I put the ice first, added the ingredients and stirred.

It was very nice.

  I Re-Cut The Cord
Posted by: MarkintoshToo - Yesterday, 09:41 PM - Forum: Tips and Deals - Replies (8)

Well I "re-cut" the cord today. We officially got off of cable TV about 2 years ago and went to YouTubeTV for general viewing. Recently, my wife and I were talking about which subscriptions to end that we were not using with the primary contenders being ATV+, Disney/Hulu and Netflix. But then we agreed after a short conversation that it was the most expensive subscription that we were using the least, that being YouTubeTV at $83 a month.

In reviewing our habits, with a news media blackout in place since the last election, we were watching about 15 minutes of local news a few times a week and that was about it. When we thought about anything else there were a few instances of watching reruns of Diners, Drive-ns and Dives to kill time.

So today I cancelled the YoutubeTV subscription, becoming a hero to my wife. Then downloaded the ATV app for the most local station, which not only carries the news, but also some other programming. Free.

This just felt good...I highly recommend it.

Turns out we need NOAA, FEMA, etc. : Texas tragedy
Posted by: Lemon Drop2 - Yesterday, 08:05 PM - Forum: 'Friendly' Political Ranting - Replies (6)

As this horrible flash flood tragedy on the Guadelupe River in Central Texas plays out, hard not to see how federal budget cuts to the weather service and emergency services may have played a role.

Not to mention that Kerr county has no warning system!?!  Texas spends billions on "border security," maybe some investment elsewhere is warranted.

How agonizing for the entire area impacted, especially the parents of the 2 dozen girl campers still missing. I'm astonished how that could happen, as someone who spent decades with youth camping organizations.  I pray the girls are safe somehow awaiting rescue,  but it seems unlikely at this late stage.

  New Mac Studio M3 Ultra

Grabbed a refurb Studio with M3 Ultra while the forum was on sabbatical.

The refurb store was chock-full of M3U & M4Max Studios at the time. Still a few there (and lots of M1 & M2s as well).

Very nice machine!

Have (virtually) rowed around the world
Posted by: Le nouveau clavier de Todd - Yesterday, 07:22 PM - Forum: Tips and Deals - Replies (2)

Folks,

Almost twenty years ago, I began rowing on a Concept II indoor rowing machine (ergometer). Concept II lets you track your progress on its web site.

This past week, I finally hit my long-term goal of rowing around the world (40,000,008 meters going through both poles).

In the beginning, I would rotate between a daily 10k, 5k, or half-hour session. Some years back, I switched to a daily 10k. Originally, I could complete this in just under fifty minutes. Nowadays, it takes me a bit less than an hour.

Switched from listening to podcasts to a daily, compact-disc worth of whatever audiobook is current.

Color me satisfied.
