These creatures do manage to wiggle their way into your heart. Losing them is never easy. They never live quite long enough.
I've come to accept their short lifespan, but only 9 years is too short to just die of old age.

So sorry for your loss. Poe the Calico kitty just came into my office here as I reading this and tearing up. She also sends her condolences along with the rest of our furry brood. How wonderful that your pups were shepherding her until you arrived to find her. Blessings to all in your home.
On the kids, this is what has always worked for us...whenever a pet dies, we just tell them that (name) has gone to Heaven and is with (name of other deceased pet/relative) now, safe and happy. And that someday we will all be together again there. We also hold a memorial service and the children (and us in some cases) read "sendoff" letters to the pet and/or say a few words wishing them well. It is very healing for all of us and we feel gives due honor to our dearly departed furry friends.
