By this time I had slowed from 55 down to about 30.

Am I understanding this correctly? After noticing instances of deer near the road you were still driving at 55? It took eight of them actually crossing the road near you to slow to 30?

If that was the case, you drive much differently than I do.

It is a highway, Todd. And this area is loaded with deer. No one around here drives like you say you do. If we did, no one would be driving over 30mph... ever.

Route 78 ( or 80?) west of NYC the traffic goes by the herds eating on the side of the highway at 75 mph. Only place I've ever seen that many deer on the side of the road in the middle of the day. Munching away at the very edge of the asphalt, too. dozens and dozens and dozens of 'em, for miles.

how's the wolf population in michigan?

Re: I Roughed Up A Deer Last Night - Rick-o - 05-04-2011

billb, I've experienced that same scenario coming down I-75 at night. Dozens, if not hundreds, along the side of the road grazing. As soon as your headlights catch them, the jerk up like they're ready to flee.

Definitely some white knuckle driving! ::o

matt, the big wolf pack is on Isle Royal. There may be some in the U.P. (or even in the lower), but I'm not sure. We do have lots o coyotes. They pick off the old, weak ones. Or, you know, like the deer that have been recently involved with a motor vehicle. Rolleyes

I thought this was going to be about domestic violence.

I should have known better.

Deer.... #1 predator in the US are humans.

Humans.... #1 predator in the US are other humans. #1 ANIMAL predator is ... Deer.

Oh, and BTW.. those "Deer Alert" 'whistler' thingies ?

Do NOT work.

Oh Deer......8-)

I disagree re: "Oh, and BTW.. those "Deer Alert" 'whistler' thingies ? Do NOT work.

In my experience, when properly installed, good quality units work very well.

Dodge Deer, favorite sport on SR 24 N central Florida. Leave a window slightly open, the deer can hear the wind. Modern cars are too aerodynamic, deer can't hear us.
