Re: After sleeping on it a night, how do you feel about the new Apple products? - mattkime - 10-24-2012 i'll probably keep my current imac. i'm somewhat interested in an ipad mini. or the new ipad. might be a good device for eReading. I'm on the way to a new job. hopefully i can pick up a retina machine. Re: After sleeping on it a night, how do you feel about the new Apple products? - NewtonMP2100 - 10-24-2012 ....first thing that comes to mind is that they do not seem to be as soft as a down pillow......... These will be faster since they are ivy bridge chips? Re: After sleeping on it a night, how do you feel about the new Apple products? - AllGold - 10-24-2012 Of course the first thing that came to mind was jokes about physically sleeping on those hard Apple products. Anyway, yes a quad-core mini will be faster than your Mac Pro 1,1. If you look at any of the benchmark sites you will see how far down on the list the Mac Pro falls. Pretty much any quad-core i5 or i7 machine will kill any of the older Mac Pros, especially the 2.66GHz 1,1 model. I have the same machine, by the way. But you sure can't stuff four hard drives inside a mini or MacBook. Re: After sleeping on it a night, how do you feel about the new Apple products? - ka jowct - 10-24-2012 Can't get excited about any of it except possibly the iPad. The move toward sealed systems really annoys me. I understand that it serves Apple's financial interests to build throwaway machines that limit all "upgrades" to initial purchase options, but it eliminates any desire I might have to own one of these products. Aside from the financial reasons for doing this, it also seems to be part of their focus on dumbing down and idiot proofing (the creeping of the iOS into the desktop OS). I wouldn't apply the "Pro" designation to any laptops that have no user-upgradable elements. I'd prefer to have an optical drive in any desktop machine I might use, but at least you can get an external drive to fill that need. Re: After sleeping on it a night, how do you feel about the new Apple products? - deckeda - 10-24-2012 How do I feel? (I just this morning watched the keynote.) I'm indifferent to the inability to upgrade computers after the fact unless the factory upgrades are horrendously expensive (and I realize that's debatable). Most computer purchases are upgraded at purchase, or never. I'd like to see MBP Retina models get less expensive and become the norm in a year or two at the latest. Making the "regular" (i.e. the top model) iPad Retina, just as the iPhones have been, hasn't increased their prices any. Unsure about the iPad mini. I don't like the non-Retina display of my gen 1, and this new model has the same resolution but the text will be smaller, and I'm regularly making mine bigger by zooming. I liked the the iPad mini TV commercial a lot. Re: After sleeping on it a night, how do you feel about the new Apple products? - decay - 10-24-2012 i have been thinking about the iMac's changes, especially the 21.5in. • removing the optical drive was unnecessary. add another USB port to make up for it. in fact, add two. most PC towers have 6-8 ports. • who cares if the edges of the iMac are thin? the middle of the back still bulges out. • taking away the option of user RAM upgrades was completely self-serving. it hurts the end-user and it hurts independent dealers/service centers. • a 5400 rpm hard drive... in a $1300 computer? really? the previous gen included a 7200 rpm drive. honestly, how much does that save Apple per unit? i'm not going to say beleaguered, but maybe they have lost their way a little bit. why does every upgrade have to feel like Apple takes away as much as they add? can't they just improve one area without backpedaling in another? regarding the 27 inch: why leave the channel empty for an entire month? we have clients who need larger iMacs and buying refurbished isn't an option for them.
