Could you use an HDMI model and add a HDMI to composite adapter? They are very inexpensive. I think this is the one I use,

Sure, that is an option.

In that case, just looking for a reasonably priced smart Blu-Ray with optical out for the audio.

I'm afraid I don't know anything about blue ray players but I am very curious about the 5.1 audio discs you are using and the stereo equipment you are using. It must be a very high end system I assume.

My own system is very modest but adequate for me. I have a two channel system as I want to keep things simple. Accuphase vintage amplifier and magnepan speakers.

Looks nice. Always been a fan of Magnapans.

My system isn't audiophile really- ironic I suppose, since I make my living as a mastering engineer.

I am looking to be able to enjoy the recent slew of 5.1 remixes and special additions only available on blu-ray of some classic album remixes by Steve Wilson, notably Yes' CLOSE TO THE EDGE, XTC's NONESUCH, Jethro Tull's BENEFIT and others.

I've got a Samsung BD-D5700 bluray player hooked to my 14 year old Sony.

I think it does what you want, but I don't know if you can still buy them.

Does it have an optical audio (light pipe) out?

I have an older Panasonic (DMP-BD60) that has a video out (yellow RCA) and optical audio out.
