I'm not sure I'd be planning on a long-time continued use of a clicking hard drive that didn't mount, even if it is functioning now.
Does it have a S.M.A.R.T status in Disk Utility?

Yeah. Clicking is bad.
Run SMART Utility and install the SAT driver to check the status of externals.
