USB hub. Don't mess with TB, not worth it.

BTW, the 2011 Macs were the generation with TB1 but USB2 only. I have 2 (typing on a 2011 Mini now) and had a third a few years ago.

Does the 2012 mini sleep properly with all that plugged in to the back? That's going to be the big issue with a hub. Put everything but the mouse and kb on a hub, use a direct connection for the new HD.

The 2012 Minis sleep fine but take about 10 seconds to wake up. The 2014 Minis wake up in 1-2 seconds.
