Mandoline slicers are tops amongst those kitchen gadgets bought frequently then abandoned soon afterwards. There is a round handle/gripper thing that holds the food and keeps your hands away from the razor sharp blades. Life is too short for cheap tools. I like it for onions and cucumbers. I have not tried potatoes or tomatoes but the blade is very sharp.
