I'd bet that if you looked around in thrift shops or yard sales or those types of places you'd find a large selection of them for free. Mandoline slicers are tops amongst those kitchen gadgets bought frequently then abandoned soon afterwards.

And the dried blood cleans off the stainless blades pretty easily.

I have the first model you link to. It does a great job removing finger tips. Ask me how I know Sad

I like it and use from time to time. My family won't go near it, nor will they eat anything I prepare with it, recalling my accident.

We tried the cheap ones and eventually bought a good one. There is a round handle/gripper thing that holds the food and keeps your hands away from the razor sharp blades.

Life is too short for cheap tools.

I don't recall the brand, but I can look it up if you care.

I have this one. Ceramic blade with 4 thickness settings. I like it for onions and cucumbers. I have not tried potatoes or tomatoes but the blade is very sharp. I do have a kevlar glove (now) and a regrown tip of my finger.

I have a brand new one still in the box that my sister bought for me a few years ago.

I've heard plenty of horror stories about those fiendish devices!
