Re: Have you chipped your dog? - kap - 11-21-2007 The doggie was supposed to stay with us for only a few days until a good loving home was found. Well, the rest is history ![]() What a coincident and a great idea! I have been thinking of a Pet-O-File for past few weeks after a visit to an animal shelter. Re: Have you chipped your dog? - AlphaDog - 11-21-2007 There has been some speculation that the chips are leading to cancerous tumors, but I can't find anything that says this is a conclusively proven health risk. This is an article about it, though. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/09/08/AR2007090800997_pf.html Louie is chipped, and it was a requirement of the animal rescue organization, and they paid for it. For Louie, it was really traumatic, because it wasn't done in conjunction with another procedure and he was painfully aware of what was happening. It terrorized him, and he was already scared enough. (It was NOT our regular vet, either.) We were threatened with an "Iggygate" situation if we didn't get him chipped and have it registered to them, too. ![]() I do know there are different chips and those different chips require different scanners. There is a risk of someone using a scanner that doesn't pick up the signal of the chip, although Louie also has a tag on his collar saying he has an Avid chip. If his collar is still with him should he ever get lost, the chip would be helpful. If not, well... I'd probably have it done again, but only if it could be done when the dog was under anesthesia. The cancerous tumor risk sounds kind of scary, but many of us have small cancerous tumors that are easily excised, and that's what these seem to be. One of our previous dogs had to have a number of them removed throughout his 13 year life, and he didn't actually die of cancer. I know that our vet does keep all of the records for the chips he puts in, and if he's contacted about an animal that is lost, he sees to it the dog (or cat) is brought to his clinic for boarding until the owner can be contacted. I do like that aspect of it. Re: Have you chipped your dog? - AlphaDog - 11-21-2007 [quote kap]The doggie was supposed to stay with us for only a few days until a good loving home was found. Well, the rest is history ![]() You shouldn't have to have him rechipped, and it might actually become more confusing. Can't you just get the contact information changed?! I know it's possible to do it with Louie's Avid chip. I did. Re: Have you chipped your dog? - TheTominator - 11-21-2007 [quote kap]What a coincident and a great idea! I have been thinking of a Pet-O-File for past few weeks after a visit to an animal shelter. If we have enough grass roots support for this, it will really take off. When they think of going on the Internet, I want people to think "Pet-O-File". But I'm sure this online pet ID database isn't unique. I'll bet there are a lot of Pet-O-Files already on the Internet. The key word here is CONSOLIDATION. There might be many online/off-line pet ID database but not all of them are 'connected' to one another. Shelter, rescues, vet offices, and the like don't share their database for whatever reasons. Re: Have you chipped your dog? - vicrock - 11-21-2007 graylocks - collars/tags can come off and get lost - but chips are permanent - it is a small price to pay for long term protection. I've seen the studies that suggest that the chips might cause injection site tumors- but the incidence rate is very small in relation to the possibility that a dog might get lost. Emma is almost 12 and was chipped as a pup - Truman was done when we adopted him about 6 years ago. No problems so far. Re: Have you chipped your dog? - Psurfer - 11-21-2007 I say do the database anyway. And the name has a nice ring to it. Here's to more "Pet-O-Files" on the internet! (uh, wait a minute...) Unfortunately, the chip idea is better than the reality. Kap is correct in that it's not a given that shelters will even scan for them, or be able to do so effectively. I learned that first hand, it's stupid but true. And that the competing chip services each require different scanners is totally idiotic. Maybe someone should work on a scanner that can read them all (probably need legal agreements from all the co's first...) I know it's possible to do it with Louie's Avid chip. I did. I did not know that contact information could simply be changed without his being rechipped. Found the info: He has an AVID chip as well. $6.00 for information change. $15 per single pet registry. Microchip was $5.00 which was done at the shelter. The prices reflect the fees in 2004. Re: Have you chipped your dog? - Racer X - 11-21-2007 both my cats were chipped by the shelter as part of the adoption process. Neutered, chipped, all current shots. $100 for both cats, including 2 year licenses. Both are indoor only cats, but if one does wander out if we do something stupid, the chip proves they are licensed, and who they own. (you do know that no one owns a cat, you are their staff) There is no such thing as a "free" puppy or kitten. Not if you are taking care of them properly. Ain't that true ... agreeing as first time dog owners. |
