We're basically lake or still-water paddlers, mostly out for an hour in the evening (we live on a dammed up river) or an afternoon on nearby water. I've never thought of individual canoes. We have gone canoe-camping on the Allagash lakes in northern Maine, so if we ever do that again need enough size to handle wind and waves, and tote gear.

Interesting that these high-end canoeists are using kayak-style double-ended paddles. Don't know how that would work for us. My wife doesn't like the seating position in kayaks—bothers her back.

Thanks for the links—the canoe links, anyway. I'd prefer to keep it down to c. $1,000 if possible.

Any thoughts on 'normal' canoes?
