I thought this was an interesting graphic posted on the BBC site http://www.bbc.com/capital/story/20150216-my-taxes-go-where. In sum, it looks like we pay a less tax than the main western countries, put a lot more towards defense and health, and way less on social welfare and resources.

And I assume that's not counting state and local taxes. . .
BTW, "social welfare, pensions, benefits" are not at all the same things; unless that's all for those on the dole.

Yep. You may be confusing tax bill with tax bracket.
