Do you know characters (friend of a friend) that are so bizarre .... - decocritter - 10-09-2006 that you think you should start writing down the stories they tell and the things they do? Buck (48 year old gay Southerner lost somewhere between "Gone With the Wind" and "The Adams Family) and Mary (his 80 year old mother who inherited 2 Plantations from relatives (including Buck's dead father). Buck drives a 1970's Rolls Royce that he bought with their last dime, after he had 2 slightly run down plantation homes torn down (so "No one would ever live in his family home that did not have the family name). He sold the land (producing timber farm) for 25% of what it is probably worth, so he could buy Victorian Antiques (Both homes were once full of these, but he burnt them for firewood ). He then sold the Victorian Antiques for pennies on the dollar. He now likes period French furniture and purchased a $15,000 silver box that belonged to Wallis Simpson, but no one will pay that for it because it is damaged. His sweet mother Mary (who nearly died in childbirth with (Buck), lives with him. She looks like a cross between a character in a William Faulkener story and something in " Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte" or "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" She is propped up in a chair and rarely moves. Well, the two of them are now penniless and living on Mary's SSI. Today, Buck says that he is looking for an apartment in my area because their place has a wall to wall mirrors in the Living Room and Mary talks to herself in it "from sunrise to sunset". Uh - huh. Re: Do you know characters (friend of a friend) that are so bizarre .... - Monster - 10-09-2006 I was thinking of myself, but I think Buck has me beat.... Re: Do you know characters (friend of a friend) that are so bizarre .... - decocritter - 10-09-2006 Buck has never held a job. He was always cared for by a "negress" (his term) . Buck doesn't wash his clothes (Brooks Brother's stripe shirts with medium starch, always crisp and clean). He just throws them out. He keeps a supply, fresh from the local thrift and goodwill stores. His shoes look brand new. He wears an alligator belt. The only thing amiss in his appearance is his hair . I have wondered if is real or a wig. Oh - he does wears Mary's 3 platinum and diamond rings on his pinky. He got stopped by the police on the way home because the headlight was out on his faded dark blue Rolls Royce. He can't afford to fix it. He carries minimum insurance (no collision). The car, with its red interior strangely reminds me of a coffin. Re: Do you know characters (friend of a friend) that are so bizarre .... - blusubaru - 10-09-2006 Ever seen the movie "Grey Gardens"? Re: Do you know characters (friend of a friend) that are so bizarre .... - decocritter - 10-09-2006 No -wasn't that Jackie O's relatives? Re: Do you know characters (friend of a friend) that are so bizarre .... - laarree - 10-09-2006 What I want to know is how or why you know them. That would be a tale in and of itself. A friend of mine tried to make me watch "Grey Gardens"--I got about halfway through it. I found it unbearably sad -- poor pathetic big and little Edies, whose mental illnesses guided them from wealth to squalor. I once was friendly with someone who had a deranged mother--she forced him to brush his teeth with an electric toothbrush she used to masturbate with. There's a town named after their family. The part with the toothbrush has elimated my breakfast appetite. Yucko!! Re: Do you know characters (friend of a friend) that are so bizarre .... - DaviDC. - 10-09-2006 Real life is always stranger than fiction. Re: Do you know characters (friend of a friend) that are so bizarre .... - $tevie - 10-09-2006 I've known some rather bizarre characters, but they seem Norman Rockwell-esque now that I've read about Buck and Mary... Re: Do you know characters (friend of a friend) that are so bizarre .... - cbelt3 - 10-09-2006 To answer your question- write a book about it ! Take some of the money you earn from the film rights and get Buck some counselling, although it may be a bit too late. Alas, the difference between Eccentric and Insane is usually personal wealth. It sounds like Buck has succeeded in moving from quaint Southern Eccentric to classic Southern Wacko. |
