Thunderbolt hard drives, no deals? - Mr645 - 03-14-2018 Looking for a 4 TB external drive, desktop 3.5 inch is fine. Would like Thunderbolt but 3 times more than USB 3.0 drives. Any deals out there? Re: Thunderbolt hard drives, no deals? - sekker - 03-14-2018 What are you using it for? USB3 is likely as fast as TB for spinny disk drives. Re: Thunderbolt hard drives, no deals? - ka jowct - 03-14-2018 There are almost no single-bay TB drive enclosures. What is the reason that you feel you should get Thunderbolt? Re: Thunderbolt hard drives, no deals? - N-OS X-tasy! - 03-14-2018 I expect you meant a 4 TB drive, yes? Re: Thunderbolt hard drives, no deals? - jdc - 03-14-2018 What they said. No platter based drive can exceed USB 3 speeds so getting a 4 TB tbolt does nothing. If you want more speed from a platter drive you will need to build a 2-3 drive RAID 0. Re: Thunderbolt hard drives, no deals? - Filliam H. Muffman - 03-15-2018 Another vote for just buy the USB 3.0 drive, or did you get stuck with one of those Mac models with Thundercrap and no USB 3.0? In which case, you didnt mention what this drive was for, but if its just for backup, USB 2 more than enough. Re: Thunderbolt hard drives, no deals? - Mr645 - 03-15-2018 Mostly because I have Macs with no more USB ports and unused Thunderbolt ports. In this case it's a 2012 Mini with a Time Machine drive, USB card reader, Keyboard and a USB extention cable used for thumb drives. So the 4 USB ports are in use and the TB port is not used. Re: Thunderbolt hard drives, no deals? - ka jowct - 03-15-2018 Maybe a USB hub for the Reader, keyboard and thumb drives? Or you could go nuts and get a TB hub or dock. |
