The Death Star is evil - special - 01-18-2025

AT&T has stopped offering its 5G home Internet service in New York instead of complying with a new state law that requires ISPs to offer $15 or $20 plans to people with low incomes.

Starlink appealed the decision too. It doesn't really cost them anything, but they did spend money on the R&D, maintenance, and launches for the satellites. They need to recover some of those costs.

They could charge everybody $10 a month and still recover their costs. What they are trying to cover is outrageous CEO salaries, and shareholder value, and extravagant lifestyles. Screw'em.

PG&E out this way has been raising rates, and will do so again "to recover costs from the fire".

True to a point, but administrative salaries won't be impacted.

I want to thing a state owned utility would better serve the customer, but then there's TX and windmills.

Complicated. Years and years, ATT lost money on basic local telephone service but massive profits on long distance. Was their business model until they lost their monopoly status.

Seems to me, StarLink just doesn’t need to offer service at a loss. ATT today is NOT the same Ma Bell. But I’m sure they can make money at $15/month as Mint mobile offers that rate.

Which fire is that? My understanding is that all the recent fires in the L.A. area occurred in Edison territory.
