I wanted to use my ipad charger for my gps unit. I was wondering if the high current output of the charger was going to cause any problems with the gps (which calls for a lower current). Should this work or will it cause any damage?

A device should only "pull" the amperage needed. If the voltage is the same, having a higher amperage charger should not cause any issues.

By "charger" do you mean the USB wall-wart?
Yes.
It has a maximum draw of 10v for quick-charging the iPad. Standard 5v devices should draw 5v.
