I also do not remove the display completely like it says---I simply open at an angle. Still have to disconnect the LCD inverter cables.
Did the same thing. The adhesive on the EMP shielding is quite strong.
My 2006 20" White iMac was a refurb atnd the tape was already gone the first time I cracked it, Actually did use chapstick for the display screws each time.
Wouldn't yours be a 2006 by the way?
Yes, you're right, just looked it up in Mactracker- a late 2006 model 5,1.

isn't a terribly egregious misnomer.
I don't think that was implied. Knowing the Apple name rather than the strict year of manufacture helps one get on the same page.
Also, MacTracker is great. I keep it on my Macs, 'Pads, and 'Phone.

Oops== Joey, if you're still reading-- very important with that model once buttoned up:
1) Launch iMovie (I think) and film a quick movie using internal cam and mic to make sure they didn't become disconnected
2) Try getting a disk in and out of the optical to make sure the case properly latched.

My mother's Core 2 Duo iMac hard drive went down and I just hooked up a nice external firewire drive to it. Been humming nicely for the past two years. Sure, it's not quite as fast, but works fine for her.
