I use TuneIn all the time (and really like it) but too many stations opt out of it. That's annoying. I can listen to local stations on my phone using an FM app but only with a wired headset.

Slow? Navigation or playback? I found the former to be as snappy as the stock interface. As to playback, I've only used AirPlay, and it worked well. If you still have a first gen, try XMBC 11 Eden. Might be worth having it for another XMBC and/or AirPlay destination.
