I think AirBNB is great.
You'll want to set up a friendly profile with friendly face pic before inquiring about any listings otherwise you'll get a pretty negative response from potential hosts.

Well, that may explain my first two rejections. Rhonda recommended them when I asked about reasonable accommodations in NYC a week or so ago. After those first rejections I decided maybe I ought to fill out a profile and throw a pic up on the page. Might be a coincidence, but the next one I tried for was accepted. I was impressed with the site itself and the person I'm dealing with seems to be nice. I'll let you know how it went if when I return safely on May 17th.

I've been an airbnb host for several years now and I would not accept someone in my home who didn't have some personal info in the profile. If I were the first person to host this person I asked questions about why he/she would be visiting.
I've met all kinds of interesting people through airbnb. Last spring I had two Spaniards who asked if they could purchase some things from eBay and have them delivered to my home. Apparently things were so much cheaper on eBay for them. They ended up buying about 10 things.
