You guys are going a bit overboard here with the survival gear. He's going trailer camping in a parking area with electricity, not on a wilderness expedition. I believe in being cautious, but come on!

If you're just staying at the campsite or populated areas no need to go crazy. If you're going out on trails, be prepared. You'd be surprised what even smart, experienced people do. People like me just wait for callouts. And hope it's not too late or the person isn't too badly injured.

A double sleeping bag and an old Ford wagon are all we used to need. Now we need an air mattress under the bags.

Agreed.

Pam's cautions make sense and jd was pretty clear on the extent of his exploration.

I really like her recommendation of a *basic* compass, specifically a standalone "mechanical" compass. Even though likely not needed, it's still fun to use.

I still have my dad's old compass. It looks almost identical to this civilian copy:

Its dial is black, not white and the luminous markers aren't, not much anyway. But it's still fun to use.

It hasn't changes a lot over the years:

Obviously one doesn't need cool mil-spec. Something very basic is serviceable and fun to get to know. The SAT phone can stay home.

Exactly.

We just got back and it was a blast! My girlfriend had a great time and so did I; it really brought us closer and crossed a few significant events in our relationship. She took me to a place that was very important to her and I was super impressed at the great views, the fresh air and the pleasant weather; having her waking up next to me was probably the best part of it all. I wish we were still there.

She is a far more experienced camper (I know that some may call what we did "parking", but whatever) than I am and she was showing me the ropes of assembling/disassembling the camper, cooking in closed quarters and showering in a small room (we ended up using the camp showers after a while, as they had WAY more room).

I would do that again in a heartbeat!

Glad you have a good time! Maybe more trips in your future. We kind of get spoiled with hotel and resort travel. It's fun to get a little closer to nature.
