Sources for toy wheels, axles, car parts...?

How old is the boy? Sounds like you're going to be doing the building.

A couple of our grandsons, now 7 and 8, have developed considerable expertise making their own vehicles out of the large collection of Lego parts they have accumulated (they started maybe three years ago). The 'technical' kits can be quite complex (some are even motorized), but once mastered they become the foundation for creativity. Might that would be a good path for your son.

He's 6. Yeah, I'm going to be doing some of the basics, or guiding him through it.

He's into legos. Originally he wanted to design his own flying car out of legos, then buy all the parts and sell them in kits with instructions... but buying individual pieces is $$$.
