Why is time machine so slow?

Fresh TimeMachine backup. Machine left alone for an hour and only backs up a couple hundred megabytes. USB 3 hard drive

Whether you should is another question.

Currently using this trick and my backup speed is MUCH faster. Obviously I have no idea if its due to the modification or if my machine already chugged through the slow bits. I know I have thousands of tiny files on my machine so that might count for slow TM speed.
