Your idea of adding a splitter before the cable modem will work. I have a similar setup. It will be able to transmit the network back through your coax wiring upstairs.

One thing I don't see mentioned but you may be aware of already is that it is recommended to add a MoCA POE filter before the very first splitter. It prevents your network traffic from leaving your home.

OK interesting... I may be able to that since I have access outside to some connector where cable comes into building.
