I like their Z cameras and I would definitely buy this bad boy. BUT, I think there'll be a Z8, which would be the D850 equivalent. A more manageable situation.
The Nikon Z cameras are very nice and works for most people.
A Z8 would be interesting as a high megapixel camera. The big question is about me on this Z9. Will they chase Sony with a 45-50mp chip or 24mp like Canon. Would a theoretical Z8 would need to be more than 45-50mp to have a market segment to sell to. Maybe Nikon would use the 61mp chip in the Sony A7R 4.
That's what they all seem to want to know. The Z7's are 45mp. The output is exquisite. They can't go lower.
Based on my eyeballs, Nikon does more with Sony's sensors than Sony itself does. I'm confident about that aspect. You know me, I don't really concern myself about their business situation. They seem to be listening to their customers.
It's been pretty radical for them to nearly abandon their F-mount and DSLR's to put their everything into mirrorless. I do believe they have the superior mount. Their S lenses are superior. BUT, like you mention, for the masses, they'll need cheaper lens alternatives. It'll take sales I suppose for Tamron and Sigma to jump on board.
One thing they have going for them is the brand name.

As a non-Nikon user, I often wonder what people want out of a Z8.
The Z7 II would seem like the mirrorless version of the D850 and the major gripe seems to be the AF performance. So, if Nikon released a Z7 III with better AF, would there be a need for a Z8? What other features do people want out of a Z8?
Having switched to an A7R IV, I'm not so sure about the 61MP... I think 45-50MP might be the sweet spot for a full frame sensor.

A less honkin' big body but with nearly all the features. The Z7 doesn't have a reasonable vertical grip option. The D850 had what the D5 had but without the grip. BUT, you can attach a full featured grip when you need it.
I think Nikon purposefully focused on making the Z 6 and 7 as compact as possible. That's what drew me to upgrade. I'd like for the Z8 to be much smaller than the Z9. Something that's not dragging down your backpack. I'll take one though.

How many megapixels?
In the high dollar, pro camera market, megapixels don't really matter. Anything over 16mp is enough. I have an R3 on order

Oh yeah! You'll have to give us some info when you give it a run though.
On the issue of resolution, I have to admit that I have been spoiled by these larger MP cameras. There have been a few images I have taken that need recomposing by crop later and it has worked out nicely on the D850.

Psychological confidence in autofocus is what a Z8 would restore. The Z6, Z6 II, Z7, Z7 II, have AF that works for most situations but it's not as fast as what Canon and Nikon offer. Restoration of confidence with new numbered models may yield better brand perception.
Nikon and Canon were put in a tricky situation.
The Big 3 camera makers had settled into roughly (with some exceptions) 3 market segments for full frame.
1. High frame rate lower MP (Nikon D6, Canon 1DX III, Sony A9II)
2. Medium frame rate. medium MP (Canon 5D IV, Nikon D780, Sony A7 III)
3. Lower frame rate, high MP (Nikon D850, Canon 5Ds, Sony A7R IV).
Then Sony went and slammed a 50mp into a 30fps shooting camera and upended everything. Canon responds with a 24mp 30fps unibody and the Nikon Z9 will most likely be 45mp (rumors). On a practical level, 50mp at 30fps is pretty insane. It's an incredible amount of data. I don't know how practical the Sony A1 is. What I am sure of, it knocked the wind out of Nikon and Canon and caused them to make panic place holder announcements for the R1 and Z9. I had never seen anything like that before. It took Canon 8 months to roll out the R3 and Nikon is messing round with a teaser campaign.
Do many people need an A1 or Z9. Most likely not. These are statement cameras for the very few that might use their capabilities. I like that Sony is mixing things up though. I gave my Sony A7R III a spa for ports with my lousy 10fps and it worked fantastically.

Did you forget about the 20fps 45Mpx Canon R5?

Yeah, Nikon Z7, Z7 II and Canon R5 are 45mp. They just aren't as suited for sports with the electronic shutter the way the A9, A9 II and A1 are to prevent image distortion with art moving objects such as moving balls.

Sure, the R5 is only 12fps in mechanical shutter. But keep telling yourself it's not suited for sports to keep yourself from wanting to switch back to Canon.
