I need something for family and kid videos that doesn't cost a lot.
Are sub $200 SD video cameras any good?

Yes. Any number of Panasonic and Canon.
This one, for instance: http://www.jr.com/panasonic/pe/PAN_PVGS90/

I think the Sony Webbie looks interesting.

I have the Webbie. It's HD not SD.
I like it. I don't love it.

SD as in standard-def, or SD as in secure digital flash memory?

Uh, yeah.

I just bought an Insignia 720p handi-cam at Best Buy for $150. Not great, but cheap and extremely compact -- about the size of an iPhone. Takes as big an SD HC card as you want to stuff in it. For family fun/make memories type shooting only. Nice analog to 8mm film from the old days -- not great, but video quality wasn't and isn't the main issue. It also takes 5MP stills and is an MP3 player. Going to Hawaii tomorrow to try it out,
