Initially I thought this was a price increase but as I looked closer it really is a price drop. It's just that the standard machine is now 8-core while the old default was 4-core.
They're going from $2500 for a 4-core 2.66 with 1GB RAM and a supercrap video card to $2300 for a 4-core 2.8 with 2GB RAM and a little better video card. Bigger hard drive too.
The price of the 8-core version is also down from the old version.
This looks like a good update to me.
The new video card options like the GeForce 8800GT are nice. I'd like to get a 2600XT for my 2.66 but a) they probably won't sell it separately and b) it probably won't work with Tiger and I'm not quite ready to go to Leopard.

Oh yeah, I don't need Blu-ray and I'm REALLY not about to pay $300 for it (or $600 from Apple).

Well, I remember getting my sons a Dual 1.25 MDD after the G5 introduction for under $1300. That was for a new one, only reduction was the ~10% education one. Then the older son's Dual 2.0 G5 was under $1900 or was it $1800 when I bought it for him at the end of summer of 2005 to go to college. Again, that was new, not refurb, since I could get the iPod and printer deals only with new.

No, I think we are talking about video since Toast 8 can already do Blu-Ray data. I for one would love to be able to put my HD movies made with iMovie HD or Final Cut Pro HD onto an HD medium like Blu-Ray. PCs can already burn to BD-R, so why is Apple holding back?
then who would you send it to?
i know no one with a blu ray player...

I had the same initial reaction as you, and the same rethink as soon as I hit the BTO pages and downgraded a test machine from Octo-core to Quad-core.
At least the low-end BTO machine isn't a complete non-bargain like the old 2.0GHz Quad was. In fact, it'll blow the old 2.66GHz Quad away for the same money as that old 2.0GHz Quad.
And the 2600XT is a lot better than the old 7300GT.
I'll probably buy the Quad with the GeForce 8800GT, whenever I'm ready to fully make the move to Leopard.

The single processor 1.6 GHz G5 is poopy at any price.
I'd take a dual 1.42 G4 over it any day, even with the fan noise.
