Shopping for a refrigerator

No, I'm stalking the Mrs, you are just a bonus.

BTW, the toilet paper holder you mounted next to your garden hose is empty. Please refill it, or I will be forced to "fertilize" the lawn.

" it gets loud enough when the compressor kicks"

Sounds like a mounting problem (Racer X - no need to add more)

It might be as simple as a loose bolt or missing spring.

Even If you are set on getting a new one, this might be a very cheap fix and good for resale
if it works otherwise. Might help offset the price of the new one.

I like the ones with the pull out bottom freezer drawer - very handy

The compressor is going bad. I got the unit used, didn't realize the importance of that plastic grill on the front at the bottom. It was missing when I got it. The coils got dirty and I didn't notice, then the compressor had to run a lot and it started as a buzz and got louder. Similar thing happened to the last one, though it was like that when I moved in.

Dunno if this means anything, but my folks just replaced their 10-yr old Amana with a new LG. Standing next to the LG, you can't hear it ever unless the kitchen is dead quiet and you're concentrating.

Don't know the model, but it's got twin doors up top and a single freezer (pull-out) drawer on the bottom.

Mavic,

Although I'm not fond of consumer reports, they are your best source for initial information. Like you, I'm in the market for a fridge and I'm going with a bottom freezer model with french doors and stainless steel. Haven't decided on the ice maker yet.

I'm going with a bottom freezer because I tend to grab things out of that far less than I do from the fridge itself. French doors because the space between the sides of my galley kitchen are on the narrow side. That and it'll be easier to store leftover pizza in a pizza box in a fridge whose doors open nice and wide. Stainless steel because it looks beautiful in a transitional style kitchen and because it will be what people in my area want when I sell my apartment soem day.

From Consumers.... Whirlpool is #1 in reliability for all types. The other brands vary, depending on fridge type.

But, here's a link to my favorite product review type web site:

I don't remember if you do business with Costco or not, but they do have a pretty nice Whirlpool. It's much as Robert M. describes, although it does come with an ice maker. As you're learning, you might get stuck with that in order to get the other features you want.

I ordered a refrigerator from them in November, and I was happy with the buying experience. The cost includes shipping to your home, installation, and hauling away the old monstrosity. I know around here getting rid of old refrigerators is very awkward and costs a minimum of $25. Watching the old one carted off at the same time the new one was delivered was great. I think they originally told me it would be about two weeks before I'd get it, but it was actually more like five days.

If I was in the market for a new fridge for the house, I'd probably get something like this. My first new refrigerator, from back in the '60s had a bottom freezer, and I'm glad to see the manufacturers have swung back around to those again.

Here's a link to the Costco one: (I hope.)

Edit: Boy that link sure turned out looking weird, although it works. ???

You can remove the ice maker on most older units AFAIK. Not sure about the in-door ones.

[quote Go To Top][quote BigGuynRusty][quote M A V I C]We may just pick one up off craigslist, but I'm not sure.

We're looking for a bottom freezer, and no water nor icemaker. I was sifting through sears, lowes, and homedepot.com but only one of them let me search for fridges with no icemaker and it returned next to nothing. I may end up getting one with it and then not using it. We're also looking for stainless.

Are there any brands that are better than others? After some research, seems like almost all of the top brands are all the same anymore. Bottom Freezer, and Stainless off of CraigsList??
I wish you luck!!
Price Point??
Size??
I got the White LG Bottom Freezer for $549 delivered last year, $476 after $75 power rebate.
Quiet and cold!!

Where?????????? Sears.
Obviously on sale.
Right after "Black Friday".
Was not looking, our refrigerator died a sudden death.

Thanks guys. FWIW, I'm not concerned about disposal of the old one. I have two to get rid of and the local utility agency actually pays $25 or so per unit as part of an energy conservation initiative.
