Set us up with some "Crackers for Obama" t-shirts!

That's an interesting idea. I know people who are openly racist, and yet when they are dealing with someone they've gotten to know who happens to be black they treat them with genuine affection. Seems contradictory but somehow they separate their prejudices for a group from a known individual. Maybe as Obama becomes more familiar they are starting to think he's not a real ****** but more like that nice black guy who owns the pharmacy and they see at the Rotary every week.

It's the "He's one of the 'good' ones" effect.

Food for thought. Familiarity certainly breeds tolerance.
According to your logic, every additional minute of "face time" Obama gets in red territory helps him, i.e. the boatload of advertising ought to pay off.

I think there is a "Reverse Bradley Effect", I experienced it when I was married to a black woman. As a mixed couple I often got the feeling that some white people were going out of their way to try and let us know they were OK with us. I don't think it was done on a conscious level. A white man with a black woman is different than the reverse, unfortunately, and we lived on Portland, AKA The Peoples Republic of Portland.

Most people never thought Obama could get this far. The Bradley effect is so 1982. I think there are probably more people who are going to get in the booth and find they just can't pull the lever for McSellout and his functionally illiterate sidekick as there are who will find they cannot vote for a black man.

That is the paradox of much of the South.

I hope $tevie is right. It's an untested hypothesis. At the risk of sounding like G'man or a pre World Series Red Sox fan, I'm dubious. It would be fun to look at it as a new phenomena, but I'd prefer to do that in the rear view mirror.
