Run activity monitor, see if something is taking a large percentage of the CPU time. Try to find a cause before applying random solutions.

Ditto above. And empty the trash. Hey, it couldn't hurt.

My car is slooooooooooooooooow!!
I changed the oil, rotated the tires, and changed the radio stations, shouldn't that fix it?
Oh, BTW, I forgot to say I was trying to tow a 30,000 pound trailer, with a Ford Pinto, is that info important?

Do a safe-boot.

Restart with the shift key held down. Continue to hold it until the swirly appears under the Apple logo. Restart at your earliest opportunity.

When I had that same problem, it turned out that one memory chip had failed.

Go to System Profiler and see how much memory is showing. Run a memory test.

Actually, it was not the chip that failed on my PB. It was the lower chip socket, the one closest to the motherboard.
