I know they look kind of preschoolish, but on a forum it's easy to be misunderstood. For example, if a poster is kidding or sarcastic, someone else may not realize that and totally misinterpret their message. I've seen this lead to confusion and sometimes an angry reply. I think being able to add emoticons can help clarify a poster's true intent.

Since there's a BUTTON to add an emoticon, how about we ONLY have emoticons inserted via the button. Personally I don't think emoticons composed of less than 3 text characters should be allowed in the first place - which is how you end up with GB) being a problem. The sunglasses and other smileys should be B-) then the issue goes away.
