The original 'Phones were 4G and 8G. 16G didn't come along until the 3G. Maybe you were sold a Touch instead of a 'Phone?
I'm *always* curious (read: suspicious) of "super deals" and want to know the back story. I don't buy anything I *suspect* of being stolen (which presumes I couldn't reasonably verify that it was not).

When buying from Craigslist I try my best to assure the stuff isn't stolen.
Here are a few of my tactics.
1. If the laptop is not sold with a charger---bad sign.
2. I always ask questions as to the reason for selling, and you can usually get a feel for the circumstance.
3. If the item comes with a box, it is usually a good sign-both of these do.
4. When you boot up the Macs, the user name is similar to the person you are buying from.
5. If I smell a rat, I will log on to the Apple site and say I am checking the serial number on their database, and gauge the reaction.
I guess it really boils down to trying to read the person and the situation. It doesn't always work.
The 15" Unibody MacBook Pro 2.8Ghz I am writing this on was from Craigslist. When it was listed, I thought it was a scam since it was listed for $2350. I had good communication with the seller and his biggest concern was for the public meeting place. He was as nervous about the transaction as I was.
Turns out he made an impulse purchase, and there would have been a restocking fee, since it was the upgraded processor. So he tried selling it locally instead. It was new in sealed in box with receipt and I love it! Paid $2200.
I did buy one MacBook that had a cracked screen that turned out to be stolen, and I was able to track down the Real Estate business that owned it. The reimbursed me for it, and gave it to the Sheriff for evidence.
Any other tactics people have--list them here.
