In extremes, I don't make the heat pump work to death -- i just keep the house at 80 (in summer)
and use a window unit in my room of preference.
In winter - I have turned the heat pump OFF - when it goes below a certain temp, there's just no point.
I dress warm, use a decent space heater (I like the oil filled radiator style) and use electric blankets.
I can warm up a bathroom in the morning with an 1800 watt hair dryer faster than anything else out there.
If I install the timer on the water heater, I know that would help -- but I can't find it since moving here,
and haven't bothered since 2004.
It's $120 at peak, and $55 on a good month for 1600 sq ft, all electric house - 7 years old.

I'm glad I don't live in Hawaii.
It's funny that Washington, which has extremely low rates due to all their hydro power, chose to build those nuclear power plants years ago,
Whoops!

In the summer I have to shell out $85–$95 for my 400 sq. ft. apt. with no AC. After reading about what an energy hog the cable box is (they can draw as much as a refrigerator), I've been unplugging it whenever I am going to be gone for a few hours.

Last month was $56.52 for 478 KWH. That's about average for me. Gas heat and water heater. My stove is electric but I rarely use it. Most of my cooking energy is from a microwave.
All lights that are kept on for more than 30 seconds at a time are either CFL (or regular fluorescent) or LED.
Very seldom air conditioner use from a window unit.
My electricity use would be lower if it weren't for the three laptop-class computers I have running 24/7 as well as frequent use of my power-hungry Mac Pro. Sump pump and dehumidifier in the basement (when I'm not too miserly to run it) contribute too.

Here's a current table of average rates across the US: http://www.eia.gov/cneaf/electricity/epm...5_6_b.html
Does this chart include all the taxes and fees that go into the bill? I read the small print at the bottom but it isn't clear quite how it was figured. My kilowatt charges are only half of the cost of my bill.
