Don't listen to him, listen to me!

paranoid? Smile
No, but there were like a zillion threads about these very questions when everyone rushed to download Lion that first day.
A bunch on this page:

I understand that Apple does not sell Lion separately on an optical disk. I was asking if they also eliminated the optical discs with all their Macs. That's a different question.

There may have been some threads about this, which I may have missed.
This was in response to the question:
so what if the HD (with restore partition) goes kaput?

Also, when Apple advertises a HD as 500 GB, how much of that is used by the restore partition?

Your other questions have already been answered.

Took about 5 minutes to find that page. C'mon spacey, give it a click, that-a-boy . . .

"so what if the HD (with restore partition) goes kaput?"

Supposedly, you can restore if / when you have a High speed internet connection.

Make a physical back up DVD / USB thumb drive

If you're smart, you'll make BOTH

You can boot up w/o OS installed and pull the OS and down from the interwebs on machines that shipped with Lion.

Otherwise use the Lion Recovery Assistant and set this up before hand.
