Wouldn't a simple UV filter help keep the powder out (from the front elements, at least)? I sure wouldn't be changing lenses in the middle of all that!

Lenses aren't exactly hermetically sealed. If a zoom lens was you wouldn't be able to zoom as the required volume of air change wouldn't allow the lens to pump ( without a expensive and extensive pneumatics system).
There are too many levels/standards of weatherproofing. Pros buy pro lenses and will spend the money to have them cleaned out after extreme use. Or rent and return. :-)
